Tarpon/Egmont Key

Hello Everyone, Fishing in my area this week has been fantastic. There is bait everywhere and the large predator fish are right on their heels. Water temperature is still fairly low for this time of year at about 79 f and should stay right around there for at least another couple weeks. This is a great water temp for the fish because its warm enough to keep there metabolism high yet it is cool enough that they don’t get lethargic during warmer parts of the day. As long as there is a good tide, they will bite all day long. Schools of tarpon continue to push into the area and were caught this week fishing the area passes, bridges and beaches. Many can be sight-fished along area beaches with a variety of baits, lures, and even flies. These fish can be seen from a great distance in the crystal clear water especially when they break the surface as they come up for a breath of air. Prime time for the silver king is just around the corner and will continue through mid-July with the best fishing usually occurring around the new moon of each month. Other migratory fish also made the report this week including, loads of spunky blaktip sharks (some over 6ft), kingfish, large jack crevalle, bluefish, and big spanish mackerel. These fish are stacked just off the beach around area passes especially where bait is plentiful. Live bait isnt even fair to use most days when fishing in this sort of mayhem. On the flats, topwater trout fishing first thing in the morning has been on fire. “walk the dog”  and popper style lures have slayed some large trout to 24″ this week. Mixed in are a few redfish, jacks, blues, and the ever present ladyfish. Dont be suprised either if a 3-5ft blacktip comes up and blasts you lure into next week. This is one of my favorite times of the year to fish with beautiful conditions, big, hungary and plentiful fish, and clean water. This also makes it one of the busiest times so book your trips today. Until next time, catch a memory.   Capt Tyler Kapela “Hit and Run” Charters
